The name ‘Janmarg’, which means ‘people's way’, was given by the Hon. Chief Minister of Gujarat, Shri. Narendra Modi. Janmarg is a system for one and all. It is about connecting people and ensuring progress. Janmarg is about creating an identity for public transport in Ahmedabad and a sense of pride in Ahmedabad's citizens for their city. Janmarg is an image that will define the ethos of Ahmedabad as a city that is ready to accept change, a city that has a vision for the future, a city that will transform the image of public transport in India.

Connecting with the pulse of the public that is saying 'now is the time is to transform Gujarat', we had initiated a massive mission: 'Urban Development Year 2005'. As part of this we attached much importance to connectivity. |

In Gujarat cities, people can still move with ease. They can access their places of work, education, entertainment without much difficulty. People need not travel long as the destinations are close by, an outcome of long planning traditions Gujarat state practices. Speeds are reasonable. And above all, the streets are safe. Fatality rates are the lowest in the country and are comparable with world cities. |

We recognize that without an efficient and quality public transport, in the not too distant future, our cities will face severe mobility issues. We have therefore, initiated preparation of integrated transit plans. We look at Bus Rapid Transit as a sustainable transit option and had initiated detailed planning in 2005 for Ahmedabad. Today the project is in an advanced stage of implementation. Surat and Rajkot have also made progress in this regard. |

The purpose of this Website is to get connected with the world and share Gujarat's, more specifically Ahmedabad's experiments and experiences related to Bus Rapid Transit System and other complimentary measures aimed at improving urban accessibility. We welcome whole-heartedly your inputs in this process of making the cities better connected. |

I would also like to say that partnerships between the Communities, Public and Private sectors have been a critical part of Gujarat's development process and I strongly believe even these efforts to 'Connect People' through mass rapid transit systems would also have to evolve through a similar process. |

| The government of Gujarat had declared 2005 the ‘year of urban development’ (Shaheri Vikas Varsh). During this particular year, the urban development department undertook various initiatives to resolve urban issues such as traffic management, and the introduction and enhancement of a city transport system. The Gujarat government (GIDB), Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) and Ahmedabad Urban Development Authority jointly drafted a comprehensive urban mobility plan keeping in mind the needs of Ahmedabad as a mega city, including in this the implementation of the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) and the planning of the regional rail and metro in future years. |

CEPT University was assigned the work of the preparation of a detailed project report (DPR) for the implementation of the BRTS project in Ahmedabad. Meanwhile, the government of India announced the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission (JNNURM) for urban development and the AMC submitted its proposal to the government of India for the BRTS project, which was the first of its kind in the country. As approved by the ministry of urban development, the AMC is now implementing the BRTS project in a phased manner. The BRTS project was approved in November 2006 and work on the project commenced in 2007. The urban mobility plan provides choices to the people in the case of their mobility, in terms of different modes such as the AMTS, BRTS and the suburban rail or metro, all of which complement each other.
The Ahmedabad transport strategy is people–centric. It focuses on moving people, not traffic. We believe all people, men and women, young and old, physically challenged should be able to move around in comfort. Efficiency, affordability, safety and security are central to the plan. To emphasize this, Hon. Chief Minister Shri Narendra Modi named the system as ‘Janmarg’. |

| Janmarg, the people’s way, comprising 88.8 km of network, spans through the city, connecting the central areas with outlying industrial and residential areas as well as institutional areas. The project being developed with an estimated cost of about Rs. 1000 Crores, received support under JnNURM. The share of central, state and local government is in the proportion of 35:15:50.The project is being undertaken in two phases and the first stretch of phase 1, from RTO to Pirana, covering a distance of 12.5 km will be dedicated for the people of Ahmedabad on October 14, 2009. |

| On the Occasion of Inauguration of BRTS on 14th Oct., 2009 |

| I am very glad today when Janmarg, the Bus Rapid Transit System (BRTS) in Ahmedabad is being opened for operations. As such the service was open to the public during trial runs since the last 90 days and the response during this stage itself was overwhelming. Now at the formal inauguration, I feel very confident that the system would be very helpful to commuters and citizens of all ages, particularly to women, students, old people and handicapped. Overall, with its emphasis on reducing trips through private vehicles and on pedestrianisation and cycling, it will hasten the city’s progress towards becoming a global city with world class infrastructure. On this occasion, I thank the citizen for their support to the project and hope to continue to enjoy their support in contributing to smooth functioning of the bus system and making our city green and livable |

| Ahmedabad, the largest city in the state of Gujarat, a major destination for investment in the country, is fast emerging as a mega city. The city is fast expanding in terms of area and population. This is accompanied by the rapid pace of motorization. Anticipating the negative impact of over motorization, AMC has initiated a series of steps. In 2005 we restructured AMTS by introducing new fleet through private participation. We are going to induct more buses into the public transport system. We have improved road network significantly as a comprehensive development project. A jewel in this series of initiatives is the introduction of a Bus Rapid Transit System, the JANMARG as named by our Hon. Chief Minister. We are proud to present this first complete BRT project of India to the citizens of Ahmedabad. The first stage 12.5 kms of Janmarg is complete and has been opened for public. We are happy that the response has been overwhelming. With completion of the network being developed under BRT, we promise you that now onwards moving around in Ahmedabad will be a pleasure. Join me on board Janmarg for a long term sustainability of Ahmedabad. |
